Last evening around midnight (29th Dec.), Police evicted homeless people and their supporters from Miyashita Park, Shibuya, Tokyo. (Photo by Ikeda Sachiyo) The group of homeless people (including us) has organized self-help activities such as soup kitchen, free medical consultation, night patrol, etc. during the year change period, when the public welfare services are closed and the poor people left helpless on the streets.
Although the group had seeked a permission for the usage of the park also during the overnight hours, since the homeless people lost places for sleeping after the last train, Shibuya ward office rejected our requests and locked out the 100 homeless people and their supporters with a large group of police officers. Evicted homeless people and their supporters were forced to move to the next park and continued to camp out to survive by helping each other. Tokyo is even the host of Olympic games in 2020, but it is clear that they do not protect human rights adequately. We will keep updating information. What you can do:
Visit the camp site (Jingudori park) to act up together, if you can.
